THE BAKER
The Munchie Shopp Bakery started in a small kitchen in Stone Mountain, Georgia by myself, the owner, Anique Houpe. Food is a way to warm the hearts of all people because we are the happiest when we share delicious meals.
During the summer of 2020, the world experienced the global crisis of Covid-19 in which many full-time workers, such as myself, found ourselves in a situation where we had no child care and no resources for our children. I was forced to resign from the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier and stay home with my children. At the time, we had no income and no help from our local government and community. I was also denied pandemic unemployment despite my commitment to the postal service.
While being home, I found myself baking cakes, cookies, and many sweets that put smiles on my children faces and anyone who came by our house. I experimented with many homemade recipes that I obtained from my elders until I perfected them.
It wasn’t long before I started baking desserts for my family, friends, and my church members. By February 2021, I found myself being interviewed by the New York Times about my economic crisis from the pandemic. When the reporter asked me how were we making income, I told him from the desserts that come from my kitchen! The next thing I knew, the article published in March and the Munchie Shopp Bakery was an overnight success and blessing for my family!
While we are currently working hard to get a store front soon, I truly give thanks to Elohim God for blessing me with the talent and skills to make delicious desserts. I thank you all for supporting a small black owned business! Stay tuned for what’s to come!
